Prime Stage Theatre presents “Look Forward: The Ruby Bridges Story”

The year is 1960. A shy, smart 6-year-old named Ruby Bridges becomes the first African American student to attend a formerly whites-only grade school in New Orleans. Escorted to class by U.S. Marshals through a hostile segregationist mob, the youngster and her family are instantly cast into the national spotlight as symbols of America’s ongoing efforts to ensure equality and justice for all, starting with its public schools. Ruby Bridges’ remarkable journey of resilience and eventual triumph is told in Prime Stage Theatre’s presentation of Look Forward: The Ruby Bridges Story running for seven shows Jan. 17-26, 2025 at New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square East, on Pittsburgh’s Northside. Tickets (adult $39, artist/educator $24, student $19) are available by calling (412) 320-4610 or by reserving online at https://tinyurl.com/mwm432kx.

New Coach to Take Over for North Hills Girls’ Basketball

New Coach to Take Over for North Hills Girls’ Basketball

Jason Pirring was hired earlier this year as the new head coach of the North Hills girls’ basketball team, taking over a program that broke through in 2023-2024, winning its first section title in 44 years. Pirring has many years of coaching experience on his resume. He was an assistant boys’ coach at Shaler from 2006-2012, helping the Titans to a state semifinal appearance in his last year. He most recently served as the middle school coach at North Hills. He led that team, which included his oldest daughter Lucy, to a 41-0 record over the last two years. When Tony Grenek left North Hills after two years to take the same job at Shaler, Pirring was excited for the chance to coach the Indians to see if he could continue the strong play at the high school level, while also getting the chance to coach his own kids.

North Hills and Shaler Area Students Work on Conservation Project

North Hills and Shaler Area Students Work on Conservation Project.

This fall, environmentally minded Shaler Area students joined with their counterparts at North Hills High School to raise money toward the nonprofit conservation group Allegheny Land Trust’s purchase of 51 acres next to Ross Community Park. On the property is the highest point of the Girty’s Run Watershed, which drains six municipalities on its way to the Allegheny River. Primarily through the efforts of students, elected officials and concerned members of the community, the necessary $386,562 was raised for the land trust to buy the property and permanently maintain it as green space.

The Real James Bond...Was Dominican Showing at City Theatre January 18 to February 16.

What happens when a James Bond-obsessed Dominican boy (who won’t go anywhere without his Nerf gun) finds out that the real James Bond was Dominican? Learning that Bond creator Ian Fleming drew upon the life of Porfirio Rubirosa—a Dominican diplomat, international polo champion, race-car driver, and spy—as the inspiration for 007 shook actor Christopher Rivas’ very foundation. Set to a live percussion score and immersive projections, The Real James Bond…Was Dominican is a young man’s guide to love, color, code-switching, white-washing, fake-it-til-you-make-it, and the roller coaster of finding one’s true self. The show will run at City Theatre (1300 Bingham St. Pittsburgh, PA) from January 18 to February 16. Tickets can be purchased on their website: https://citytheatre.culturaldistrict.org/production/94448/the-real-james-bond-dot-dot-dot-was-dominican.
