NORTHLAND LIBRARY LOCAL AUTHOR FAIR

Celebrate the talented authors living and writing about Pittsburgh at Northland Library on Saturday March 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 pm. Purchase books, chat with authors and attend author talks and panels. A few of the local authors include: Tom Stein, Melissa Wiesner, Linda Rettstatt, Zachary L. Brodt and more. SENECA VALLEY BAND MEMBERS COMPETE IN PMEA BAND FESTIVAL



Recently, 17 Seneca Valley Band students were selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 5 Band Festival held at Hopewell High School. District Band is a representative festival of all the schools in PMEA District 5. It is the first step in the state-level music festival system, where students have the opportunity to advance to the regional level. Based on audition results, nine Seneca Valley students, Paityn Armstrong, Noah Bracht, Isaac Hixon, Kaite Mack, Camyn Meanor, Bridget Scott, Kami Topf, Mackenzie Tunstall and Adrian Wrubel were selected to move on to the PMEA Region 1 Band Festival later this month at Deer Lakes High School.  Additionally, senior clarinetist Ms. Armstrong was awarded a PMEA District 5 Music Education scholarship at the event. Students are led by Mr. Varden Armstrong, Mr. Robert Babick, Ms. Sara Snyder and Mr. Brian Croach, secondary instrumental instructors.


AAUW NORTH HILLS PITTSBURGH BRANCH HONORS DANA CORNELIUS WITH GATEWAY TO EQUITY AWARD

Dana Cornelius will receive the American Association of University Women’s Gateway to Equity Award from the North Hills Branch on March 20, 2024 on the campus of La Roche University. Cornelius is the visionary and force leading “Pack-A-Purse Pittsburgh.” This service initiative collects and organizes purses filled with toiletries and other essential items. For eight years, this advocacy initiative has brought together friends, neighbors and colleagues to work together to provide packed purses to organizations in Pittsburgh that service women in need. Cornelius also teaches 3rd grade at Peebles Elementary and has taught in the North Allegheny School District for 27 years.


FAT HAM ARRIVES AT CITY THEATRE ON MARCH 2ND


This uproariously funny, Pulitzer Prize-winning new play comes to City Theatre straight from Broadway! A modern revamp of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Fat Ham follows Juicy, a queer, pensive, young Black man finding his way in the world when the ghost of his father demands Juicy avenge his murder. Set at the family cookout, this “hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy” (The New York Times) examines love, loss, and a particular set of daddy issues. The show runs from March 2-24. THE PITTSBURGH RECORD CONVENTION SPRING SHOW 2024 IS HAPPENING MARCH 2



The Pittsburgh Record Convention Spring Show 2024 returns for its 58th show and 28th year on March 2 at the West View Banquet Hall (398 Perry Highway Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15229). There will be national and local vendors selling all forms of music, including: 50s, 60s 70s, 80s, metal, psyche, garage, surf, soul, r&b, doo-wop, jazz and more. There will also be LPs, CDs, 45s, cassettes, new vinyl releases, posters and music-related memorabilia for sale.


FCAHS STUDENT PUBLICATION WINS FIRST PLACE NATIONAL AWARD

Fox Chapel Area High School’s literary magazine Tapestry was named a first-place winner in the 2023 American Scholastic Press Association’s Annual Review and Contest Awards for scholastic yearbooks, magazines, and other publications.  The publication was one of 16 from across the nation with an enrollment of 1,001-1,700 students to receive a first-place award. The 2022-2023 student staff members of “Tapestry” were 2023 graduates Ishaan Acharya (editor-in-chief), Talia Bugel, Helia Hamidi, Aura Chuck Hernandez, Mikhail Ion (layout designer), and Sophie Shao; and 2023-2024 seniors Caroline Berger, Mira Busch, Laura Carter, Kaylee Dunham, Emmett Gillespie, Eileen Healy, Clara Kelley (head of submissions), Emma Kim, and Isabella White. The students’ advisor is Fox Chapel Area High School English teacher Jessica Green.


SEALARKS WOMEN'S GROUP MEETING ON MARCH 13TH

Sealarks Women's Group will meet at 1 pm on March 13, 2024 at Memorial Park Church to hear Amy Steele, Head Librarian of Northland Library, present "A Trip to Portugal".  The group provides Christian fellowship and social activity for women alone.  All women alone are welcome to attend and to consider joining the group.  Contact Edie at 412-487-7194 for more information.


IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL BC3 PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT TRAINING BEGINS MARCH 13


In-person AND Virtual Training options are now available for BC3’s Personal Empowerment Training (PET). Our next PET is set to begin on Wednesday, March 13, and we invite you to join us for this personal development training. Rooted in Emotional Intelligence (EQ), participants will learn 40 empowerment concepts and strategies to build and maintain a healthy mindset. When we feel in emotional control, our self-confidence grows and so do our relationships. This cohort-based learning experience is limited to 20 participants.
